Daily writing prompt
What’s something most people don’t understand?

In my experience, and in the writing community experience in general, I’ve noticed that getting reviews is really hard. It looks like readers are not aware of how important reviews are for authors and their books.

However, reviews are like injections of fresh blood that keep books alive and strong enough to fight. They give the books the strength to remain afloat in the publishing ocean that is flooded every week with at least 20,000 new books, most of them, unfortunately, made by AI.

But to help you, dear reader, to understand how powerful reviews are, just think about the last thing you bought online. Did you simply trust the words in the ad you saw, or did you look deep into the reviews about the product to make your purchasing decision?

Books are not different. They may have an amazing cover, a great blurb (synopsis) and be pitched as the last wonder of the world, but if they do not have enough reviews, they will flop tragically.

In my case, making sales and having reviews are even harder; I write to people who have no money (kids), and even when their parents buy my book and their children love it, it is the parents who remain in charge of leaving a review about it on Amazon. And as we know, parents are busy people.

Another misconception people may have is that if they read a book and found it great, other people will automatically think the same about it when they come across its page on Amazon or in the shelves of a bookstore. No, they won’t. The only thing a potential consumer thinks about a new product, be it a book or not, is something like, “Is this any good?”, and “Well, let me take a look at the reviews.”

If you are one of those few amazing people on Earth who love writing reviews about the books you read, please get in touch through the contact page, and I’ll send you a free personalized PDF of my book so you can read it and leave an honest review on Amazon with your thoughts and impressions about it.

Happy reading to you all!

  1. Dear Michael,

I would like to make some suggestions here so that you can improve how you display the reviews shown on your “Home” page, which are quoted below for ease of reference and discussion.

    What readers said

The book is entertaining, full of good twists and fun stuff. Now I’ll buy a couple of them for my nephews.

Still reading! He just had his bath and is starting his first lesson. I’m rather invested now and am enjoying it!

The book is funny, interesting, full of plot twists and etc. It’s like my favorite fantasy books coming together as one single book with everything I used to like as a kid in it…

I’d absolutely recommend this book. My kids are already loving it.
It’s great to see them leaving their phones aside to read again…

There are three reviews so far. Each review should ideally begin with the name of the reviewer and the date of submission, both of which should be a hotlink so that anyone clicking the name or date will be instantly taken to the original source of the review. After all, clear documentation and trustworthiness require proper citations.

I shall leave you another piece of advice or insight: a writer may do very well to realise that often the most valuable and/or memorable (kind of) person in their career is not necessary the most ardent or biggest fan, buyer or critic of their book(s).

      2. Dear Michael,

Furthermore, I strongly recommend creating a “Book Review” or “Book Feedback” page (not post) so that readers can leave their comments there as reviews or feedbacks.

Therefore, you should also have a sentence or two on your “Home” page to include a direct link or clickable button for people to visit this “Book Review” or “Book Feedback” page so that they can submit their reviews or feedbacks there.

        Yours sincerely,

      4. Dear Michael,

Once again, you are very welcome. I am far from done with providing feedback as well as help and advice. I mentioned to you in one of my previous comments here that I am awaiting your response to my long and bespoke comment addressed to you at

        📝 Manuscript Assessment Criteria ☑️

Considering that you have not liked nor responded to the said comment, I am inclined to believe that there are aspects or elements in the comment that have bothered or displeased you to the point of deciding not to like and respond to it, in spite of the fact that it is a very multifaceted and highly significant and informative comment whose contents bear a great deal of implications and ramifications for all of us as writers (and self-publishers in varying degrees).

For the reason of enshittification (also called crapification and platform decay) mentioned in my said comment alone (even though there can be other (compelling) reasons for you to consider), I would like to recommend that you think about whether it is worth your while to implement a shopping cart (via installing a plug-in) so that interested readers can purchase your book(s) directly from your current blog, regardless of how many books you would eventually sell on WordPress and Amazon respectively. In any case, or at the very least, having a shopping cart could impart a higher degree of autonomy and perceived quality to your blog.

If you do decide to implement selling books on your blog, then you will also need to consider whether you should mention to your customers and visitors on Amazon that your merchandises are also available for sale on your current blog.

If you have patience and a good reading voice, you could also consider making an audiobook (narrated by its very own author) available.

I would like to repeat here that a writer may do very well to realise that often the most valuable and/or memorable (kind of) person in their career is not necessary the most ardent or biggest fan, buyer or critic of their book(s), and that I am still awaiting your response to the long and bespoke comment addressed to you in my post entitled “📝 Manuscript Assessment Criteria ☑️”.

May you enjoy the coming weekend. Happy April to you very soon!

  2. Dear Michael,

The title of your latest post here, namely, Books Need Blood To Be A Success, gives me the impression that your book is a blood-sucking vampire.

    1. It kinda is a vampire.
This book is draining me every day.
But it’s my dream. I have to keep working on it.
      Thank you!

      1. Dear Michael,

Whilst the book is draining you, it is also training you!

I wonder which trains you more: being drained by working on your book or working in the gym.

What about being both drained and trained by your lately found avian friend SoundEagle🦅?

        Yours sincerely,
