What do you wish you could do more every day?
Hey, wait. That’s not what you’re thinking. I’m a writer, and as one, my main task is to lie and be evil.
I lie when I create worlds and places that do not exist, situations that will never be real, and characters that have skills that go beyond the possibilities of our world.
But just being a good liar while doing all that is not enough; I also need to be evil. I have to put my characters in daring situations, and when they start managing to get out of them… Plot twist! And they find themselves in an even worse situation that not only needs to be managed but also will cost them something they love.
That’s it. Writers are professional liars and also evil toward the characters they create. And guess what? Readers love that! That’s why I wish I could be even more creatively evil toward my characters. This is the secret ingredient that makes their journey more interesting.

One of my favorite TV series of all time is Breaking Bad. Just imagine if Mr. White got his cancer treatment for free… The whole plot would collapse, and the series would be about a man treating his health condition. Pretty boring, right? But then Mr. White is told his treatment would cost a fortune; he has a son with special needs and is financially broke. That’s evil, but that’s exactly what made the series so interesting and captivating.
In real life, I’m an honest person, sometimes way too sincere concerning what I feel and my opinions on all things. But when I put on my writer’s hat, things change, and I become a perverse liar, telling my readers things that do not exist and thinking about how I could make the lives of my characters more challenging and miserable. Curiously, that’s exactly what makes my characters get better, stronger, and wiser.
And isn’t our life like this? The challenging situations of life are what make us develop new skills, acquire more knowledge, and be more wise. So we have to be thankful when facing hardships; they are the force that pushes us forward and makes us be a better version of ourselves.
