A protester holding a sign saying BAN LOVE
Daily writing prompt
If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?

If I could permanently ban a word from the general vocabulary, it would be the word love. But not because I don’t like it; in fact, it’s the most beautiful word of our vernacular.

However, “love” is also the most abused word ever. People use it lightly, or sometimes in an even worse way: to manipulate others.

We hear the word “love” everywhere, and not rarely is it knit by the mouths of the most disgusting people possible. My stomach twists when I hear, for instance, politicians using “love” as a way to manipulate their supporters. “Vote for X, so love can win!” When they use this word, they actually mean “greed.” And once elected, they adhere to their own agenda, and you may be sure that “love” is not part of it.

The word “love” is also used by men who just want a nightstand and women looking for money or favors. And here goes a hint: If a person says, “I love you,” to people after people, what they actually love are themselves. And it turns out that when they say it, they are making a selfish use of the word that enbbeds with it the most pure meaning of altruism. This abuse makes the meaning of the word “love” get so diluted that I myself have to stop and think a little bit to understand what a person really means when they say it.

But what about people who truly love someone and those who would hear them say it? How could they use or hear this word after my cruel ban? Well, true lovers wouldn’t miss it. The daily actions of the lover would convey more meaning than the word itself, and the loved one would feel it deep in their soul with every gesture of their lover.
